Artist's Notes
I'm on the fence about several things in this, but in the end, I had to go with my gut.
Originally the sand spiral was supposed to be more pronounced, and what you see was a sketch guideline for a spiral you don't see. That sketch just hit Syl so well that I decided to leave it, it made her ridiculously happy. Parts of the sand made me so happy I chucked out parts of the original effects design.
The last frame's background of destroyed-monster came out pretty much as I envisioned it-- I wanted it to be chaotic and sketchy. I always freak out when I go for the chaotic and sketchy, my brain wants everything super organized and it just looks MESSY to me. But there's something to be said for a little mess, tatters just don't work unless they're messy. Plus, I think it's important for any artist to push their comfort zones once in a while and try something that goes against the grain. This felt a lot like messing around in my paints, which I miss deeply, so all in all it was a very good week for me.
Once again, I choose not to go the sound-effects route. There's a place I'll always fall short in comics. Sometimes the sound effects just break up the image so much for me, I can't stand it.
Well as you can see, this is the end of this particular monster. I couldn't be happier. It drove me NUTS. Enjoy.
